Istanbul Qualifiers – 3 defeats at highest level for Malta

Malta ended their commitments in the European Championship qualifiers with a heavy 19-5 defeat to Slovakia. The reds' goals were scored by Matthew Zammit (2), Paul Privitera, Niki Lanzon and Jon Brownrigg.

 

Final Standings Group A:

 

Spain 9, Turkey 6, Slovakia 3, Malta 0

The National team played its second game of 3 in the European Championships qualifiers losing to hosts Turkey 12-5. Niki Lanzon (2), John Soler, Clint Debono and Michele Stellini got Malta's goals. Malta play Slovakia on Sunday morning before returning home.

Malta suffered a huge 26-2 defeat to Spain in the first match of the European Championships qualifiers. It was always going to be a very tough match for the national team, facing such world class opposition. Moreover its a transitory period for Malta, especially since the retirement of goalkeeper Josie Cachia and the talented Jonathan Valletta. Sliema's John Soler got the team's two goals.

 

Turkey are up next.

Following September's successful results in Lugano, Malta will be competing in the European A Championship Qualifiers which take place between Friday 30 April and Sunday 2 May in Istanbul.

 

Malta will face tough opposition in the form of Spain, Slovakia and Hosts Turkey.

 

The top two teams will join top waterpolo nations, Hungary, Italy, Serbia, Montenegro, Croatia and Germany, together with 4 other nations who are also competing in other Qualifying Groups, in the Final Tournament later this year.

 

National Coach, Sergio Afric, has selected the following squad:

Alan Borg Cole, Timmy Sullivan (Exiles),

Michele Stellini, Nikki Lanzon (Neptunes),

Matthew Zammit (San Ġiljan).

Alex Attard, Jurgen Borg (Sirens),

John Brownrigg, Mark Meli, John Soler, Alex Bianchi, Clint Debono, Paul Privitera (Sliema),

Sergio Afric will be assisted by Peter DeCesare.
